CELEBRATING A CENTURY- US SHEETS COMMEMORATE CULTURAL, POLITICAL, & SCIENTIFIC MILESTONES OF A CENTURY
The USPS Celebrate the Century stamp sheets hold a special place in philatelic history. Here is a brief listing of their unique features:
- Commemoration of 20th Century Events:
- The Celebrate the Century series comprises ten sheets, each representing a different decade of the 20th century, from the 1900s to the 1990s.
- These stamps feature images recalling various important events that shaped American history during those decades.
- Each sheet contains fifteen stamps embedded within it.
- Design and Format:
- The gummed souvenir sheets have an unusually large format of 7.5 inches by 9.0 inches (190 mm by 229 mm).
- The top left corner of each sheet displays the decade in numerical format.
- The entire background of the sheet is devoted to a specific event from that decade. For example, the 1900s sheet features the Wright brothers standing next to their Flyer II.
- The stamps are printed at an angle of 8°, and the horizontal perforations run from the stamps up to the edge of the sheet.
- The stamps are arranged in four rows, with unique nesting arrangements for each sheet.
- Descriptions of the decades depicted by the stamps are printed on the gummed side of the sheet, behind each stamp.
- The words "Arts," "Sports," "Historical Events," "Technology," "Entertainment, "Science", "Political Figures," and "Lifestyle" appear on the edges of the sheet.
- Stamp Selection:
- The images for the first five sheets were selected by the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee.
- Stamp images for the remaining sheets were selected via a national poll.
In summary, these stamp sheets serve as a vivid historical mosaic, capturing the essence of significant moments from the 20th century in the United States. ??
