Elvis Presley (1935-1977) was a true American rags-to-riches story.  Born in poverty in Mississippi, Elvis cut a demo record at age 18 in 1953, and Sam Phillips, president of Sun Records in Nashville, signed him to a contract.  Elvis' first single was "Blue Moon of Kentucky" in 1954, and within two years Elvis was hailed as the "King of Rock and Roll."  Hits such as "Heartbreak Hotel," "Hound Dog," and others too numerous to list followed, even as Elvis served two years of military duty beginning in 1958.  Wikipedia says that he is the best-selling solo artist in the history of recorded music.

While racking up an unprecedented streak of Number One singles and albums, he found time to make 31 movies and by 1965 he was Hollywood's highest-paid actor; later in the decade he conquered Las Vegas.  Elvis sang to sold-out houses until his sudden death in 1977 at age 42.
