US 2008 STAMP PAYS HOMAGE TO AMERICA'S BELOVED BASEBALL ANTHEM
In 2008, the USPS issued a 42c stamp paying homage to one of America's most beloved songs, "Take Me Out to the Ball Game." Written in 1908 by lyricist Jack Norworth and composer Albert Von Tilzer, it has become an unofficial part of baseball culture. Interestingly, neither of the song’s authors had attended a baseball game before writing it! The chorus is traditionally sung during the seventh-inning stretch at baseball games, and fans are encouraged to join in.
The stamp art is based on a baseball scene appearing on a circa 1880 "trade card" that promotes a product made by a Michigan company. On the stamp, the product related words have been replaced by the song title.
