Postage Stamp Trivia
Stamp collecting is fun for people of all ages. There certainly is something to spark anyone’s interest. Today is Monday fun day! I hope you enjoy these interesting postage stamp related trivia facts.
1) Did you know that captains of ships were the first mail handlers in America? - They picked up the mail from mail bags that were hung at various taverns in different towns.
2) Throughout time, various animals have been used to deliver mail. Some countries have used horses, dogs, pigeons, camels and sometimes even reindeer have been used. In 1879, Belgium was the first, and last, to use a different species of animal altogether. They used trained cats to carry their bundles of mail from town to town. The 37 kitties were soon unemployed as they proved to be unreliable workers!
3) The United States lays claim to the largest and smallest post offices in the entire world. Chicago’s head post office is the largest one and Ochopee, Florida has the smallest one.
4) We have all become accustomed to the peel and stick varieties of postage stamps of today. Before those, we had to wet the “gum” on the back of the stamps in order for them to stick. But before the “lick and stick” varieties, people had to either use their own paste, or they would sew or pin postage stamps onto envelopes prior to mailing.
Modern day technology is grand!
