Cloudscapes Postage Stamps
As adults, most of us don’t take the time to see the beauty that graces our skies every day. No matter where you reside, cloud formations provide a wonderful show of nature’s true beauty.
On October 4, 2004, the United States Postal Service issued a series of commemorative postage stamps called “Cloudscapes”. Each 37 cent postage stamp in the set is labeled as to what type of cloud it is showcasing. There are 15 different stamps in the set, each different and beautiful in their own spectacular way. One of the cool features about this particular set is that on the back of each pane there is information provided about each cloud. The USPS also released a booklet of twenty Cloudscape stamped postal cards. Many teachers used these cards as flash cards to teach children about the environment, and the air and water that sustains us all.
October is National Stamp Collecting Month and the theme for 2004 was “Reach for the Sky and Collect Stamps!” These stamps were developed with help from The Weather Channel, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Weather Service, and the American Meteorological Society. The goal was to educate stamp collectors, young and old, about atmospheric sciences.
