The National Postal Museum’s Lucky Day
The National Postal Museum is one of Washington, DC’s treasures. Part of the Smithsonian Institute; the National Postal Museum hosts a variety of permanent and rotating exhibits that everyone is sure to enjoy. You will also find thousands of postage stamps in the Museum’s renowned collection.
It recently has been the recipient of an $8 million donation from wealthy bond fund manager, Bill Gross from southern California. The generous donation is reported to be the largest ever received by the museum. The money has been earmarked for a new, and first ever, 12,000 square foot addition to the museum that will be named the William H. Gross Stamp Gallery.
Once the addition is complete, visitors will be able to view some Gross’s treasured stamp collectibles. On display will be four 1918 Inverted Jennys, a letter-carry envelope from the Pony Express, and a cover dated July 2, 1847 with a 10 cent George Washington postage stamp, among many other interesting items. But you will have to wait just a bit to feast your eyes on these fine stamp collecting treasures. The new expansion is not due to open until sometime in 2012.
