Canada’s Preserving the Poles

Preserving-the-Poles-Souv-SheetWith all the talk about global warming, it should come as no surprise, that one of nature’s most magnificent creations is showing deterioration.  Glaciers are more than just mounds of snow and ice.  They serve as the world’s largest freshwater reservoir.  Not long ago, scientists discovered tree stumps that were covered in ice for 7000 years, now lying beside the retreating Canadian glaciers.  The glacier’s shrinking has been accelerated at alarming rates due to global warming, which everyone should be concerned about.

In an effort to bring awareness to the impact of melting glaciers to the environment and the many creatures that inhabit them, The Canada Post issued a beautiful set of postage stamps in April of 2009.  The animals that were chosen to be represented on the stamps were ones that are the first to feel the effects of the loss of their habitat in the Arctic and Antarctic regions.  These stamps feature a polar bear, an Arctic Fox, penguins, and a bird that migrates between the North and South Poles.
