United Nations And Their Postage Stamps
The United Nations is the only non-postal organization in the world that is allowed to issue postage stamps. They issue their stamps in three different currencies; Swiss Francs, Euro and the United States dollar. You will never find United Nations postage stamps at a US post office though. In the United States, they can only be purchased at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, by mail, online or through stamp dealers.
Each issue from the United Nations has a design theme. Some are of social issues like the Banning Chemical Weapons, Healthy Environment, AIDS Awareness, and Crime Prevention. Some bring attention to environmental issues like the Earth Summit + 5, Clean Oceans, International Year of Mountains, and the many Endangered Species sets. Other topics of their postage stamps cover peace, sports, art, museums, flags, special landscapes, anniversaries, and so much more.
There is one stamp set in particular that was fun to see. It was called “A Universal World of Stamps – E.T. and the United Nations”. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial was one of the most popular movies of all time. With special endorsements provided by the films producer Steven Spielberg and Universal City Studios, “E.T. and the United Nations” was a huge selling success. The set was issued to encourage children participate in stamp collecting.
Stamp Center carries a wide selection of United Nations issued postage stamps. Stop by, there’s something for everyone!
