Anne of Green Gables Postage Stamps
In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the publication the widely popular book Anne of Green Gables, the Canada Post issued two collectible postage stamps. One stamp featured the main character, Anne Shirley, and the other was of the beautiful country house, Green Gables.
Written in 1908 by Lucy Maud Montgomery, this children’s book tells a tale of a young orphaned girl who was sent to live with a family who was originally expecting a little boy. Since its publication, there have been over 50 million copies sold.
Besides being beautifully produced, one of the interesting facts about these particular stamps is that they were issued jointly with Japan. The Japanese people have had a long standing love for this particular novel. Their postage stamp set features the distinctly formed cartoon style eyes that are so popular in modern day Japanese creations. The Japanese set also contains the two stamps that were issued by the Canada Post, but they have 80 Japanese Nippon instead of the 52 Canadian cents on their stamps.
The issuing of the postage stamps was not the only event that marked the 100th anniversary celebration. There were many art and cultural events, look-a-like contests, picnics, tours, as well as a parade planned for locals and tourists alike on Prince Edward Island.
